Delegates from LFHRI attended 4th World congress against death penalty at Geneva

4th World Congress against Death Penalty was held in Geneva from 24th to 26th Feb 2010.Lawyers For Human Rights International sent its delegation , which comprised of Navkiran Singh, Advocate its General Secretary , T.S. Sudan Advocate representing Chandigarh unit and a Law student of UILS Panjab University namely Navratan Singh participated in the poster competition.
Navkiran Singh Advocate was one of the panelist in the round table conference on the subject ,”How lawyers can make a difference between Life and Death”. The other panelists were a Lawyer’s from U.S.A, Japan, Uganda and U.K.

Navratan Singh ,the student of Law conveyed the message through his poster that when India having a 1.2 Billion population has only around 200 people on death row and there are only 42 cases ripe for execution,why does not India join the list of nations who have done away with Death Penalty.

The Congress was attended by around 1500 delegates from around the globe and culminated with a march by the delegates in from of united Nations to show their solidarity towards abolishing of Death Penalty.

Lawyers For Human Rights International is an active member in the World Campaign against Death Penalty and was elected on the steering committee and is responsible for running International Campaign against Death Penalty for two years.The General Secretary of LFHRI is also active since last 4 years and has filed public interest litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High court for release of prisoners on death row and due to his efforts the prisoners have been taken out of solitary confinement from the Punjab jails
and the similar relief is awaited decision in the high court.
