Lawyers For Human Rights International started a campaign to stamp out torture from the police Stations. As a part of the campaign the organisation monitors cases of police torture and help the victims of police atrocities in getting proper medical treatment as well as getting compensation for them through law courts.
On the eve of the birth anniversary of the father of the nation,Mahatama Gandhi on 2nd October, 1998, the organisation conducted a surprise raid in many police stations of Chandigarh-India to see whether the police had kept any instruments of torture in the police stations or not. It had found two instruments of torture from the police stations and the same were taken away by our organisation. Reports were also sent to the concerned authorities. Our organisation files complaints or petitions in different courts on behalf of the victims of police torture from time to time and have succeeded in getting compensation in most of the cases. Our organisation provides free legal aid to all the victims of police torture and render financial or medical help in the
given set of circumstances. The organisation has few physicians on its panel who provide free medical treatment to the victims of police torture.
Our organisation also releases publicity material and publishes literature to educate general public about the redressal mechanism to fight police torture. Special camps and rallies are also held periodically to impress upon the police authorities to use latest techniques of interrogation and to do away with the third degree method of interrogation.
Very recently, our organisation helped three victims of police torture in March, 2003 when they had come to chandigarh after being brutally tortured by Garh Shankar police. The organisation highlighted their plight through media and also helped them in getting free medical treatment at state expense through High Court.
